Hyrrokkin and Baldr’s funeral ship

The Norse myth behind the name.

Published 2026-10-23

Hyrrokkin is named after a giantess from Norse myth.[1]

Baldr’s ship

Baldr had the greatest ship ever built, Hringhorni.[4]

The funeral

Baldr was burnt on Hringhorni. The gods could not push the ship out to sea, so they sent for the giantess Hyrrokin.[4]

One mighty push

She arrived riding a wolf and pushed the ship so hard that fire flashed from the rollers and the earth shook.[4]

Spelling

The moon was originally listed as Hyrokkin, but the spelling was later corrected.[1]
